I may go to heaven - I recycled.

As my local Council aren't too good at collecting the recycling, I decided to have a go myself with cereal boxes.

If the background isn't even please forgive me :D It isn't incompetence- my screen is hard to edit from. But please do let me know.

Cold porcelain

Cold Porcelain
This is a fab recipe for making your own clay similar to Fimo and Sculpey. There are many other recipes on the web, but many of them include water in them. In my experience, the water results in a paste that cracks whilst drying.

Ingredients

2 cups of Corn Starch (corn flour)

2 cups of Elmer's Glue (pva glue)

1 Tbs of lemon juice or 1 tsp of citric acid this preserves the paste.

2 Tbs baby oil (if you don't have baby oil you can use a cooking oil, however I would strongly suggest using a clear oil unless you are planning to colour your paste)

1 Tbs of cold cream (don't include this in the mix during cooking, only when you are ready to knead it)

- Glass bowl (microwave compatible)

- Wooden spoon

Microwave Method

Mix the ingredients very well, (don't forget don't include the cold cream), the mixture will become stiff due to the cornflour absorbing the glue.
Put the bowl in the microwave and cook for 30 seconds at a time taking out and stirring each time. Once you have done this for a total of 2 minutes reduce the cooking time to 15 seconds, it can turn quickly at this point. The mixture will be very stiff but it is important to mix as much as possible. Yes your hands will hurt and I am sure you will be cursing me at this point.

Pan method
(You will need muscles of steel but I prefer this method as you have more control over the cooking)

Place ingredients into pan and mix thoroughly.
Place pan on a low heat and stir constantly.
The mixture will get very stiff, but keep stirring (I would advise having a hearty breakfast)
once the mixture is a uniform consistency all over remove from heat and allow to cool enough to handle.

When the paste is cooked it should form the consistency of decorating icing.
Allow the paste to cool to a point where you feel it is safe to handle (don't forget it will be hot in the middle). Spread the cold cream onto the surface you are going to knead the paste, this will prevent it from sticking.
Knead well for about 10 minutes, don't give up the more you knead the better your paste will be to work with.

Once kneaded, place in a plastic bag (I use a resealable food bag) leave it open for about half an hour or until the paste has cooled to prevent condensation.

Place in fridge, it will keep for at least a month if you seal it well.

You can add colour to the clay by kneading in a small amount of acrylic paint. Once dried the colour will be a few shades darker so don't forget to allow for that. It can also be painted after it is dried and varnished, but I prefer to colour it before drying as it gives a more even finish.

Now go create, it would be great to see what you have made using this recipe.
